Adjusted age calculator for premature babies

If your baby was born early, their adjusted age tells you which milestones to expect. Here's how to find it.

How many weeks pregnant were you when baby was born?

What is adjusted age?

Adjusted age (also called corrected age) is your baby's age counted from their original due date instead of their birth date. If a baby was born 8 weeks early and is now 6 months old, their adjusted age is about 4 months. Doctors use adjusted age to check growth and milestones, usually until about age 2.

How we calculate this

Weeks early = 40 weeks − how many weeks pregnant you were at birth. Adjusted age = real age − weeks early. Put another way, it's the time from the original due date until today. This follows the approach used by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Most doctors use it until about age 2. By then, most preemies have caught up. Your baby's doctor will guide you.

No. Vaccines usually follow your baby's real age since birth. Follow your baby's doctor and your local vaccine schedule.

Should I use adjusted age for starting solid food?

Many doctors use adjusted age for starting solids, because it's about baby's development. Ask your baby's doctor before you start.
