How much caffeine is safe during pregnancy?
Health experts say to keep caffeine under 200 mg a day during pregnancy. That's about one mug of filter coffee, or two mugs of instant coffee. While breastfeeding, up to about 300 mg a day is generally considered fine for most babies. Remember that tea, cola, energy drinks and chocolate have caffeine too.
How we calculate this
Pregnancy limit: 200 mg a day (ACOG and the NHS). Breastfeeding: up to 300 mg a day (CDC). Caffeine amounts are typical values from the NHS and are rounded. Real amounts change a lot by brand, cup size and how strong it's made, so treat the total as a guide.
Questions moms ask
Is one coffee a day OK while pregnant?
For most people, yes. One mug of filter coffee has about 140 mg, which is under the 200 mg limit. Check what else you have that day, like tea or chocolate.
Does decaf coffee have caffeine?
A little. Decaf usually has only a few milligrams per mug, so it's a good swap.
Are energy drinks safe in pregnancy?
Many experts advise avoiding them. Besides caffeine, they can contain other stimulants and a lot of sugar. Talk to your doctor if you're unsure.
What happens if I go over the limit once?
Going over once is unlikely to cause harm. Just try to stay under the limit on most days. If you're worried, talk to your doctor or midwife.
